Oklahoma City police officers help save elderly man

The family of an elderly man with congestive heart failure credits Oklahoma City police officers with saving his life Sunday.

William Crye Sr., 83, was eating lunch at Chen’s Buffett with his wife after church when his heart failed.“His heart just stopped, and he slumped over in the restaurant,” his son Kevin Crye said.Police officers, who coincidentally were taking their lunch break at the same restaurant, jumped into action. They initially gave Crye the Heimlich maneuver since it seemed he had choked on something and then turned to CPR until paramedics arrived to continue CPR and take Crye to the hospital.“The people in the emergency room said it's a miracle he's even alive,” Kevin Crye said. One officer also drove Crye’s wife to the hospital in their own car since she was too distraught to drive herself. The officers involved were Sgt. Britt High, Sgt. Matt Guy, Officer Mark Alexander and Officer Darren Garrett.“It's a matter of just being in the right place at the right time,” High said. “It actually feels wonderful to be honest with you. When we left the hospital, we thought he was deceased and none of us found out that he had survived until we got a phone call that you all wanted to do an interview.”It took about 45 minutes for Cyre’s heart to start beating again.“It's just amazing that the police were there to be able to take care of it,” Kevin Crye said.As of Monday evening, Crye remains in the hospital. Though it is not yet clear when Crye will be released, Kevin said he expects his father will make a full recovery. The Crye family hopes to meet all the officers who helped to thank them.
