A picture of an Albuquerque police officer helping an elderly woman
across the street on Thanksgiving Day has gone viral, and Monday, the
officer shared his story with KOB Eyewitness News 4.
Officer Cole Knight says he was just doing his job that day.
"I see this lady on the corner and she just kind of looked nervous," Knight said. He was driving near Broadway and Martin Luther King when he saw the woman standing alone.
"I said, 'well why don't I just help you cross the street? I'll stop traffic for you,'" Knight said. "She started to cross and she just kept saying, 'thank you, thank you,' and you know, it made me feel good just to help her out."
It was an act of kindness that touched people in a way Officer Knight could never imagine or expect.
"A minivan full of people and a truck behind them…everybody started honking at me after she made it all the way across," Knight said. "They all started screaming, 'thank you, awesome job!'"
One man snapped a picture of the kind deed and posted it took Facebook, garnering loads of appreciative comments for Knight.
"It's just really, really sweet," said one Albuquerque resident.
"I think it show [he's] normal," said Bill Boubong, another resident. "He's out there doing his job, which is what he's supposed to be doing."
Knight said he has no idea who the woman is, but he does think about her from time to time.
"I wonder how she's doing," he said. "I hope she had a good Thanksgiving."
Knight says he appreciates all the feedback he has received, but insists he was just doing what he was supposed to do. He says he hopes other people will do the same when they see someone in need of assistance.
"Maybe more people should try to do those things, a pay-it-forward kind of thing," Knight said.
