The makers of NimNim, a smartphone app that allows you to order dry-cleaning services, want you to know that getting your laundry done doesn't have to be a pain.
The startup's founders, brothers Akshay and Nimish Sahani, see potential for an on-demand laundry and shoe repair service, especially in a city like Boston, with its mix of college students and working professionals.
"Everyone needs their laundry done," said Akshay Sahani, who left his job at Boston-based IT performance firm AppNeta this past January to pursue NimNim. The app debuted in the Apple App Store less than two weeks ago.
Sahani, a Northeastern University graduate who lives in Westborough, said the service has amassed 170 customers so far in downtown Boston, Back Bay, the North End and Beacon Hill — and the startup hasn't done any marketing yet. It's all been word of mouth, he said. About 50 of those are recurring customers, Sahani said. Sahani said other neighborhoods that NimNim will soon be available in include South Boston, Cambridge and Somerville.
Customers can download the NimNim app, put in their address and fill out some some information about how they want their laundry done. They then can schedule where and when they want their dry cleaning picked up and dropped off. Then a freelance courier will come and pick up their laundry.
For orders under $35, NimNim charges $3.99 for pickup and delivery. For orders over $35, the service is free.
So far, NimNim has been bootstrapped and has a number of advisors, including Sourav Sachin, the former head of engineering at Flipkart, the Amazon of India.
NimNim is just the latest service that takes advantage of smartphone technology to deliver services right to your doorstep. Another Boston-area startup in this space is butler service Alfred, which won the Techcrunch Disrupt competition this year and charges a subscription fee. Other companies such as San Francisco-based Postmates and Austin-based Favor have swooped into Boston to cater to people who want items delivered via app. Google Express has also launched in Boston.
